Area of Action

Vanaprastha is situated around the remotest villages of India. To be precise, we live nearby the border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in South India.

This area is one of the poorest in the world. It has a dry land with clay mixed soil which is deep red in color. We have very little rain and there is no river in our district. Without water, the soil is very hard and farmers find it difficult to cultivate. Only with digging deep borewells (up to 250 m in depth) our people, who live on agriculture, can grow vegetables and fruits. But the system of cultivation used here is still not systematic and in cultivating vegetables and fruit people consume a lot of water. People mainly speak Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. Most of the villages are still organized following the age-old caste system and most of our people belong to the lower classes.
